Mayor Drops the F Bomb

The mayor's office first denied it, but Mayor Jerry Sanders admits to FOX6 News he dropped the F-bomb on his opponent after a debate. What do you think?

Mayor Sanders Drops the F Bomb Mayor Sanders Drops the F Bomb 4/23/08
Jeff Powers has the exclusive interview with Mayor Sanders and Steve Francis..

I honestly don't feel as though it's a big deal. I think everyone should step down from their pedestals and breath the same air we all breath. Who hasn't told someone to "f*ck off" before? Public figures are human beings just like the rest of us.  -  Jessica, Pacific Beach

Sanders was justified. Sanders may not be perfect, but Steve Francis is such a two-faced phoney who's just throwing any dirt he can and seeing what will stick that it's just sickening.  -- Mark, Pacific Beach

Good on ya, Mayor Sanders.  I have always thought whats-his-name to be a cry baby.  -  Paul, San Diego

Loved it! I like men.   -  Nora, La Jolla

In a day and age when sex is rampant on TV and I hear things on TV that I didn't even hear in boot camp, we have the audacity to try to chastise a grown man for showing his displeasure with an opponent? Want to hear worse, go to a local schoolyard. And they were saying those words before Jerry Sanders said it.  -  Gary, Escondido

Wah wah wah!!! Steve Francis what a big baby!! So the Mayor told you to go "F" yourself. I'm sure it's not the first time someone said it to you. MAN UP!!! Don't go running to the press to tattle tale.  -  Jimmy, Bay Terraces

So what?   Mayor dropped "F" bomb?  We all make mistakes, and say what we wanna say, as long as it wasn't done in public.  But bottom line is that we want a mayor who takes care of this city like Jerry has been.   -  Scott, Mira Mesa

Anyone in political office should hold the highest standards as an example and model for all of us. What Mayor Sanders did was unprofessional and totally unacceptable.  -  Myrna G.

Get real Mr. Frances! He has to be so out of touch with life if he is "insulted" by Mr. Sanders gesture. Geez...not the kind of wimp I want to run my city... get some spine! Fight back but don't whine!  -  Marci, Del Mar

I think how an elected official conducts themselves on a personal level is important. I'm more bothered that Mayor Sanders wouldn't shake the hand of his opponent then by his added bad language. Though I don't agree with that either. It's actions (or inactions) like that that define a person and he's lost my vote.   -  Susan, Normal Heights

Regarding Mayor Sanders comment to Steve Francis, it doesn't matter. The people of San Diego have never liked Steve Francis and will not vote for him. The Mayor will win by a landslide.  -  Richard, La Mesa

I think Mayor Sanders showed real backbone in his refusal to apologize for a comment that was made one-on-one, a comment that Francis is clearly trying to exploit for his own political purposes. We live in a society where too many people think that it is the "squeaky wheel that get's the grease" and Francis is being a very squeaky wheel... Both campaigns should be focused on the issues that matter to San Diegans not some "he said, he said"  -  Jeremy, San Ysidro

I was extremely happy to see Mayor Sanders not apologize. Finally a politician who doesn't go on crisis control every time someone doesn't like what was said to them. Mr. Francis will have to grow a little thicker skin if something like this hurts his feelings. I wasn't sure before, but now I am certain that this is not the kind of person I want in charge of standing up for my city!   -  Ryan, Santee

Finally a politician with some spine. Francis just needs to get over it. If he's using push polls, he's entitled to receive a few F-bombs. It's refreshing to see a mayor that will speak his mind and stand behind it. Now if we could just get a presidential candidate with a similar quality....  -  Paul, Carlsbad

This is a good indication that we need to replace the Mayor. There is no place for foul language in good government.  -  Jim, University City

Mr Francis is a crybaby. You don't use a private conversation against somebody no matter what it was. The F-Bomb is a manly word used between men. Oooooh, "I'm telling on you", Being a tattle tail is what a whining little crybaby does.   -  Charlie, San Diego

I think it is absolutely unprofessional and inexcusable. Another show of the mayor wearing his emotion on his sleeves just as he did announcing his change on gay marriage.  -  Chris, San Diego

Please pass my comment on to Mr. Francis. "Go F___ Yourself!"  I suspect my comment won't be used on the air.  Thanks  -  Wayne, Mission Hills

Mayor Sanders simply verbalized what A LOT of us would like to say to Steve Francis.  -  Seth, Carmel Valley

As a city employee, Neither one cares that we are 14 percent below pay!! What will Steve Francis do to help the City employees and their families. Nothing!!! What has Mayor Sanders done to help City employees and their families. Nothing!!!  -  Sandy

I agree with the mayor that Steve Francis has been running a negative campaign. This is the best mayor that San Diego has had in many years and our problems have been caused by incompetent city council---not our mayor. Steve's comment that this type of language should not be used in a political campaign is not valid, because the word was used in private---not as part of the campaign. I liked Steve very much until the past couple of weeks when I began to disagree with his attacks on the job that Mayor Sanders has done. I feel that the mayor (and ex-police chief) has done a fabulous job in everything that he has done for San Diego since he came to town.  -  Jack, San Diego

If said in private, should have not gone public. Mr Francis before you go and stone the Mayor, have you not swore before?  If you say you haven't..I think you'd be a liar!!  -  Rich

I think that Steve Francis is a tool.  He has no idea what he is talking about and the guy is shady.  -  John

Francis is disingenuous to make public a private conversation. He is trying to buy the election with all his money. That won't make him a good mayor. I doubt he would do as good a job as Mayor Sanders has.  -  Harlan, Mission Valley

Sanders Smug attitude and now his comments may have sealed his fate in the unemployment line  -  Craig, City Heights

Hang in there Jerry - We love you and we don't appreciate political negativity. Francis we are sick of YOU!!  -  Terrie, Bonita

I haven't even started thinking about the mayoral race but after seeing Steve Francis try to make such a big deal about a remark made in private (which no doubt was warranted), I will never vote for him. AND good for Jerry Sanders to admit it and call Steve Francis on it. Get a grip, Steve, we have more important things to think about!  -  N, Bay Park

If the Mayor wants to run a blatantly 'Sanctuary' City, aiding and abetting the invasion of our sovereign nation by illegals, then he should be held accountable to answer questions about his treasonous performance as mayor.  -  Neil, Carlsbad

Are you kidding me? A behind the scenes F-U is making news these days? If a mayoral candidate has a difficult time dealing with someone giving him the business (off camera by-the-way), how is he going to deal with forest fires, ruptured water pipes, landslides, drugs on beaches and a myriad of other emergencies. Deal with it - touch language for tough times, oh sensitive one!  -  Scott, Ocean Beach

While it is unprofessional to drop the "F" bomb in general, it was a private remark. I personally don't trust Steve Francis. He doesn't come across as someone I would like. He seems arrogant and I do think he's trying to "buy" his way into becoming mayor.  -  CJ, Mission Valley

If the mayor can't take the heat it's time to get out of the kitchen!  -  Rob, Mt. Helix

A person's true character is revealed when under fire. Jerry Sanders has demonstrated that it is time for a new San Diego mayor!   -  Carole, San Carlos

Jerry Sanders is the man! I admire a Mayor who has the guts to tell some pompous ass crybaby Steve Francis TO HIS FACE where he stands!  For Francis to use the "what about the children" card is pathetic and shows his character....a loser. The children have nothing to do with two grown men having a grownup exchange. Oh yea, Steve Go F&%* yourself! Classic!   -  Mike

His use of the "f" word shows his character.  I believe Francis is right.  Sanders doesn't like to be challenged. He stood below my balcony in Hillcrest for a news conference about building more neigbhorhoods like Uptown. But now Uptown must put up with a restaurant/bar that has live music across the street from a condo complex.  Would Mayor Sanders live across the street from a bar with live music? He attended a fundraiser in his behalf at the Universal Restaurant which is across the street from my condo. I believe he is in the nest with big developors, as evidenced with his attending opening night at Universal Restaurant that was also a fundraiser. Residents like me must deal with the noise of live music at night!  I am sure he uses the F word when he wants.   -  Diana, Hillcrest

It goes without saying that public officials, especially a mayor of a large city, should definitely be held to a substantially stricter standard of behavior by virtue of the impact and example they set.  Terrible example, especially for our youth.  -  Jose, Bonita

Voted an increase of 20%+ on his salary and his council members  --  Disrespected his opponent by dropping the F word  -- What more do we need to say but this reflects the kind of people governing our city?  Do I hear re-election?  What a joke.  Did this mayor ever fixed the current budget crisis that we are in these past years?  I'd better cover my ears before I get the F word too..  -  Al, San Diego

Shame on his opponent, What's-his-name for repeating anything that was said in private. Sanders did the right thing by speaking his mind, no one else heard him. He didn't have to MAN UP and admit it. What's-his-name, is a cry big baby. ( I really don't recall his name sorry)  -  Walt, San Marcos

Steve Francis took a very cheap shot making Jerry Sanders private "man to man" comment private. Although I do not care for Sanders language, it was in private and he stood up and admitted to making it once made public. This demonstrates to me the level of Sanders honesty and integrity. Values that I believe Francis seems to be lacking.  -  Robert, San Diego

Interesting that Steve Francis feels compelled to throw a stone. Hmmmm, Jerry Sanders has shown exceptional leadership helping bring the city out of its credit rating crisis, managing the wild fire crisis while providing top knotch interagency support. Tough times mean tough decisions and Sanders has shown he can make them. It is sad that Francis felt compelled to use this man-to-man exchange as a spoiled adolescent might. He is the one who brought this into the press. Come on, Steve  -- man up!   -  Jim

As a retiree from the City of San Diego, I wonder what my punishment would have been if I spoke these words to a co-worker. Shame on you Mayor Sanders.  -  Alicia, San Diego

The most embarrassing part of Mayor Sanders cursing Steve Francis after the debate was Mr. Sanders explaining that Mr. Francis is "a liar" and he's "a tattletail".   Our mayor is a 6 yr. old?  Hey, Jerry -- next time just tell him "I know you are, but what am I?" and stick your tongue out.  -  David, Point Loma

Steve Frances initially struck me as a candidate to watch. After this incident, I now feel that he is an opportunist. I cannot accept for one moment that Mr. Frances has never uttered the f-word in frustration or anger. Mr. Sanders, whom I have watched work hard for San Diego, clearly is frustrated with how Mr. Frances conducts his campaign. No one likes smear tactics or someone who twists or misrepresents the facts. Evidently, this is how Mr. Frances believes he can win a campaign. Hopefully, the people of San Diego have will see through his methods. Mr. Sanders responded to Mr. Frances in private, away from cameras or outside ears. Shame on Mr. Frances for being infantile. Grow up, stick to the facts and wage an honest campaign.  -  Katherine, Oceanside

I think that the actions by both Sanders and Francis are very unprofessional and inappropriate. Sanders represents San Diego as Mayor and his language should reflect that. Also, Push Poll tactics should not be used in campaigning. Campaigns should be accurate, legitimate and deal with the facts rather than negative "innuendos".   -  John, Imperial Beach

When Mayor Sanders used the 'F' word when talking to Mr. Francis he was not saying it during a public debate. It was said out of earshot of others. Maybe I would have told Mr. Francis to F*#@K off too if I were in Mayor Sanders shoes.  -  Michael, Hillcrest

Jerry Sanders is a great mayor and to have this Frances guy say the things he is saying, the mayor said only what so many people have wanted to say in situations like that but didnt have the nerve because of expoing the human side of themselves.   The mayor just told it like it is. and shame on this idiot Frances.  -  Elizabeth, San Diego

And this guy was chief of police? No wonder police have a bad rap, look who their leader was!  -  Craig, City Heights

-  John Imperial Beach

When you tattle on someone else what you are really doing is telling on yourself and what you are telling is that you are a tattletale, is that the tale you want to tell?
